    Heterogeneous continuous dynamic Bayesian networks with flexible structure and inter-time segment information sharing

    Classical dynamic Bayesian networks (DBNs) are based on the homogeneous Markov assumption and cannot deal with heterogeneity and non-stationarity in temporal processes. Various approaches to relax the homogeneity assumption have recently been proposed. The present paper aims to improve the shortcomings of three recent versions of heterogeneous DBNs along the following lines: (i) avoiding the need for data discretization, (ii) increasing the flexibility over a time-invariant network structure, (iii) avoiding over-flexibility and overfitting by introducing a regularization scheme based in inter-time segment information sharing. The improved method is evaluated on synthetic data and compared with alternative published methods on gene expression time series from Drosophila melanogaster. 1

    Currnent and likely future performance of advanced natural ventilation

    Advanced natural ventilation (ANV), often characterised by the use of dedicated ventilation stacks, shafts and other architecture features such as atria, light wells, has gained popularity for natural ventilation design in recent decades. In this research, a prototype ANV system is proposed, and the likely thermal performance in a range of UK climatic conditions predicted using dynamic thermal simulation. The simulations showed that ANV has greater resilience to future climatic conditions in the north of the UK than in the south-east and that, for the assumed internal heat gains, the design studied is unlikely to maintain comfortable conditions in the southeast of England beyond the middle of this century

    Bond Strength Degradation for Prestressed Steel and Carbon FRP Bars in High-Performance Self-Consolidating Concrete at Elevated Temperatures and in Fire

    Novel structures are emerging utilizing high performance, self-consolidating, fibre-reinforced concrete (HPSCC) reinforced with high-strength, lightweight, and non-corroding prestressed reinforcement. One example of this is a new type of precast carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) pretensioned HPSCC panel intended as load-bearing panels for building envelopes. As for all load-bearing structural members in building applications, the performance of these members in fire must be understood before they can be used with confidence. In particular, the bond performance of CFRP prestressing reinforcement at elevated temperatures is not well known. This paper examines the fire performance of these new types of structural elements, placing particular emphasis on the bond performance of CFRP and steel wire prestressing reinforcement at elevated temperatures. The results of large-scale fire tests and transient high temperature tensile and bond-pullout tests on CFRP and steel prestressing bars embedded in HPSCC cylinders are presented and discussed to shed light on the fire performance of these structural elements

    Case study: design, operation and water quality management of a combined wet and dry pond system

    Pond structures as cost-effective water treatment, storage and “source control” drainage techniques can be applied in order to reduce wastewater treatment costs, produce water for subsequent recycling and reduce the risk of downstream flooding. However, there is a need for detailed design, operation and maintenance data. The purpose of this study was to optimise design and operation guidelines, and to assess the water treatment potential of stormwater pond systems. Performance data (15 months) for a stormwater pond pilot plant were collected. The system is based on a combined silt trap, attenuation wet pond and dry pond system applied for drainage of roof water run-off from a single domestic property. United Kingdom Building Research Establishment and Construction Industry Research and Information Association, and German Association for Water, Wastewater and Waste design guidelines were tested. These design guidelines were insufficient because they do not consider local hydrological and soil conditions. The infiltration function for the dry pond is logarithmic and depends on the season. Furthermore, biochemical and physical algal control techniques were successfully applied, and passive water treatment of rainwater run-off with a wet pond was found to be sufficient. However, seasonal and diurnal variations of biochemical oxygen demand, dissolved oxygen and pH were recorded. Finally, capital and labour costs for small ponds are high
